Understanding CVT “Gear”

Hello!

Been having an issue lately when coming to a stop. Surging happens which sounded like the transmission to me. I have a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback EX. Recorded a data log and created a graph showing speed and “gear.” As soon as my speed reaches 0, I see spikes in the gear from 1 to 2...sometimes 1 to 3....then return to 1. Looking for help understanding exactly what the “gear” means for a CVT, and if anyone has seen this before...what a possible issue could be?

Gear is generally a calculation of speed vs RPM.
